Passion fruit

Passion fruit is a tropical fruit also known as passionflower or maracuja. It has a round or slightly oval shape with a purplish or yellowish skin and a pulp rich in seeds wrapped in a gelatinous, fragrant and slightly acidic substance. Its flavor is reminiscent of that of orange.

The name of this fruit dates back to the times when the first missionaries landed in America, observing the flowers of the plant they recognized in them the elements of Christ's passion, namely the nails, the crown of thorns and the hammer. Passion fruit is eaten fresh by opening it in half and removing the seeds with a teaspoon. However, it is also widely used in pastry-making to prepare desserts, sauces, juices, ice creams and sorbets.
